Feeling pretty upset. Luckily, I have a personal blog for venting a little more artfully than I’d be able to otherwise. Here goes nothing

Tonight, I was honored at a banquet for the top five percent of my graduating class. The accomplishments and future plans of each of the twenty-some students were read aloud, followed by a speech from each student honoring a teacher/coach of his choosing. While nights like these are not my idea of fun (I’d rather just get a letter in the mail, honestly), I went more for the sake of my parents, who actually care about “honors” such as this one. After nearly three and a half hours of waiting to speak, my name was finally called, and I rose to stand awkwardly in the front of the room as my academic accomplishments were listed. Among my awards and such was an honor from the National Hispanic Recognition Program due to my PSAT scores from my junior year. That particular accomplishment is not one that I have ever emphasized, capitalized on, or even mentioned before, yet it was the reason I got teased at the end of the night.

“So you got an award for being Mexican?” she asked in a stomach-churning matter-of-fact tone. Her black eyes focused, waiting for the kind of reaction she worked ceaselessly at eliciting from everyone.

Maybe she wants to feel power over those she feels threatened by. Some sort of inferiority thing, I’m guessing.

“No, actually it’s for being one of the top Hispanic students in the National Merit Scholarship Commended…thingy,” I offered, hoping this kind of watering-down of my own accomplishments would end it right there.

“So you got an award for being Mexican.”

No. You don’t get to do that. You don’t get to insult me because you didn’t get something that I did. (Again.) Not to me, not to my friends you’ve been tormenting for the past 8 months. You don’t get to put down others achievements or solos or talents because you are not the best in the room one hundred percent of the time. I’m so sorry that you feel like you are. I hate to be the one to inform you otherwise, but it needs to be said.

Furthermore, you don’t get to attribute my hard-earned awards to my ethnicity. You don’t get to make me feel like I don’t deserve something, especially on a night that’s supposed to make everyone feel “special.” You don’t get to justify your not receiving an honor because I have an “unfair advantage.” If I were blessed by the race-fairy, I’d not be writing about your pretentious, outrageous maliciousness right now. You don’t have that power. You don’t have any power. You can, however, attribute any honors I might’ve received to those long nights I spent working, studying, and wearing myself down until I collapsed at 5am. How dare you.

I see right through you. I always have. You are not nice, and you don’t fool me.

I’m finally finished with my last school musical, and i’m all caught up on Doctor Who,...

hey! sorry i haven’t been posting much lately. musical rehearsal (for Beauty & the Beast) has taken over my life. the end of the school year is supposed to be nice and calm, but this is actually turning out to be the busiest two months of my life. i really wish i could post more. be back soon, hopefully
